The school hall resonated to the beautiful melodic tones of a range of flutes on Saturday evening.  We were honoured to welcome internationally renowned Carla Rees and her “rarescale Flute Academy” to St. Catherine’s British School at the end of the week.  On Friday she ran a series of masterclasses for our flautists whilst on the Saturday evening her Academy Ensemble joined with a number of our students to perform a range of compositions from Bach, Mozart and Handel to more modern composers Whiteside, Dukas and our own Coreen Morsink!  It was a special evening and one that not only celebrated exquisite music but also the learning development of our students.

The international theme continues in school with the return of our MUN students after a successful week at the International MUN Conference in the Hague whilst this week we are welcoming five postgraduate students from Belgium who are observing lessons in the Humanities.

Tomorrow evening the Year 11 Parents’ Evening takes place where students and parents will meet their teachers to plan their strategy for the “real thing” in the summer.  Needless to say there is not a lot of time left!

The school remembered the Holocaust Memorial Day in a number of ways – Mr. Sharratt led a moving assembly on the Jewish Holocaust and the Srebrenica Genocide with the Key Stage Three whilst I “interviewed on stage” one of our colleagues Sai Sikubwabo about her recollection of the Burundian Genocide of 1993/4 – it was an extremely emotional experience for myself and our Year 9 to 13 students as well as Sai herself.

Tomorrow, Tuesday 7th February, is SAFER INTERNET DAY and we will be re-sending the link to the school’s Charter of Good Online Behaviour.  We would really like you to read this and indicate that this has been done – it would appear that many parents missed the email sent at the beginning of the year.

I would also like to thank those of you who responded to the Toastmasters International offer – we had a really positive response and I will speak to them tomorrow to organise a draw to see who will receive the free subscriptions!

Finally don’t forget the “Merchant of Venice” production this Thursday and Friday – I look forward to seeing you there!
