Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome back to a new academic year after what has been an extremely busy summer here at St. Catherine’s. The beginning of the holiday began with an outstanding set of IB results for our students – a superb average score of 35.7 points confirmed places at many of the top universities in the world – from Cambridge to Stanford, from Oxford to UCLA, from Durham to NorthEastern as well as UCL, King’s, Imperial, and Royal Holloway in London to name but few! Furthermore our Admissions Office remained active over the summer and, as we begin the new year, St. Catherine’s British School has never been in such a healthy position. This is particularly encouraging as we move ahead with the commencement of Phase One of our new Development Project! I look forward to telling you more about this at our upcoming Information Evenings. The holiday also saw us running two very successful Summer Schools – lots of children spent fun days involved in sporting and other recreational activities. Furthermore our teams performed really well in the World Scholars’ Cup Global event held at the end of July in Athens – indeed two of our teams have qualified for the Tournament of Champions in November at Yale University! As the summer vacation came to a close we also celebrated some excellent IGCSE results – indeed along with some new applicants to the school our IB1 cohort will be our biggest ever.
Last week the staff were in school busy preparing for the new academic year ahead and we were delighted to welcome all our new colleagues into the St. Catherine’s family. Pressure on teacher recruitment is huge across the globe, indeed particularly so in the UK at the moment. However, I am delighted to report that the reputation of St. Catherine’s as well as our rigorous recruitment procedures have ensured a top-class intake of new staff to the school. I would like to extend a warm welcome to all them:
Mrs. H. Kemp (Head of PE)
Mr. M. Kemp (PE)
Mrs. L. Shore (Year 1) Mr. T. Prosser (Year 6)
Ms. L. Delalis (EYFS) Mr. B. Shore (Year 5)
Ms. A. James (Mathematics) Mrs. P. Grigoropoulou (Greek)
Miss. C. O’Brien (Mathematics) Miss. S. Loukidou (Greek)
Mr. M. Irwin (English) Mr. R. Zur (Spanish)
Mr. J. Glimis (Economics) Mrs. V. Bakalexi (Learning Support)
As many of you will already be aware Mr. K. Lock decided to step down as Head of Key Stage Four at the end of the year. Mrs. S. Bougos has taken over as the new Head of Key Stage Four as of 1st September 2017. We are currently in the process of recruiting her replacement as Head of Year 7 and I will let you know as soon this appointment has been made.
We said farewell over the summer to a few colleagues – Mr. Grannon and Miss. Daykin celebrated their wedding at the end of July, here in Greece of course, before heading back to the UK to make their new home in Yorkshire. Mrs. Ruffels has also returned to the UK with her husband as he is starting a new business venture over there whilst Mrs. Theotocatos has returned to South Africa for family reasons. Miss. Liakata has also travelled to the UK to undertake further academic study to prepare her for a career in education. Coupled with the “St. Catherine’s family wedding” mentioned above, we were pleased to hear about some super family news: Ms. Kostika and Mr. Reiman celebrated the birth of the first daughter whilst Mrs. Stamou also gave birth to a baby boy.
The summer also saw a number of modifications to the current building in order to enable us to deliver the curriculum and support all our children in the best possible way. The ground floor of the Christine Warren Tutte building was adjusted to incorporate some showers and additional toilets for our youngest children. The Upper School Library has been reduced in size to enable another classroom to be added to our B Block suite. Hand in hand with this, the IB Library stock has been moved upstairs to the IB/Staff Study Room to create an even more academic-friendly environment. We have also made some changes to the Lower School classrooms to ensure that we can comfortably accommodate four forms across the Lower School.
St. Catherine’s British School continues to be an organic learning environment and this coming academic year will see us begin building Phase One our new school. Exciting times ahead – I look forward to updating you in person on all these plans at the upcoming Information Evenings.
Information Evening Dates
Upper School: Thursday, 7th September, at 19:00, in the Main Hall

2016-2017 proved to be an amazing 60th Anniversary Year for St. Catherine’s and I know that we will have lots to celebrate as we move into 2018.
With all best wishes,
