Key Stage 1 at St Catherine's consists of Years 1 and Year 2, with children aged between 5 and 7 years of age. A broad range of subjects is taught at each year level. Literacy, Numeracy, Science, History, Geography, Art, Design and Technology and PSHCE (Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education) are all taught by the class teacher, while Physical Education, Modern Foreign Languages (Greek or French) and Music are taught by specialist teachers. ICT skills are taught and developed across all subject areas.
At this stage of their learning journey children become more involved in school life and continue to develop their social skills as they interact with other children in the indoor and outdoor classrooms and playground. They continue to develop independent learning skills and the world is viewed from a broader perspective as they look beyond their home and school. In year 2 for example, the children visit a seaside locality and then go on to research the British seaside and identify similarities and differences.
We place emphasis on the acquisition of literacy across all curriculum areas as well as the development of literacy skills through a range of meaningful purposes and contexts.
At St Catherine's we offer an extensive and exciting curriculum where a cross curricular approach has proven to be both effective and beneficial while the importance of play is acknowledged as an essential part of learning.
At St Catherine's our aim is to develop the whole child by building a strong, caring community, where children are polite, caring and respectful. We feel that this allows each child to develop their individual talents and fulfil their potential in a safe caring environment, where they are happy and excited about their learning. As a result of this, our children make excellent academic progress and build their confidence and skills as learners as they move through the Key Stage.
